In the Bag

Renowned influencer and handbag guru Mr. Bags lets us in on the story behind his name, his fashion obsession, and life in the glamorous blogosphere.

Do you remember when you decided to name yourself Mr. Bags?
When I was a student at USC, I went to Rodeo Drive almost every week, and began to know luxury brands and their classic handbag lines. After Weibo became popular, I opened a Mr. Bags account on Weibo in 2012. So it all started because of interest, and at that time, I didn’t know “blogger” could be my career.

What about bags fascinates you?
In fact, I have been fond of fashion since I was young, and had dreamed of being a designer. So when I saw handbags I liked, I would research about the designer, the materials, and the design.

When you come across a new bag, what goes through your mind?
I want to know whether the bag is trendier or more classic, and whether it would suit my followers’ taste.

As an Asian in the international fashion industry, how do you think your background factors into the creative process of collaborating with luxury brands?
I really love interacting with my followers; this includes going through their comments to know what they need or what they dislike about a bag, then incorporating their feedback into each design.

In June 2019, Mr. Bags collaborated with TOD’S to launch limited edition Unicorn D-Styling Handbag. 266 of them were available on June 26, 2019 via Mr. Bags’ WeChat Mini Program ‘Baoshop’.

Do you see special preferences with Chinese consumers regarding aesthetics, purpose, styles, and so on?
Chinese luxury consumers have already passed the stage of buying handbags just for the name of the brands. Nowadays, they value the shopping experience and the sense of prestige. They also pay attention to what kind of feeling and happiness the handbag can bring. Chinese female consumers really prefer small or mini bags because it’s very convenient to pay by mobile phone now; all they need is to put their phone, keys, and lipstick into their bag.

Being an influencer and knowing that your opinion has great weight on a huge number of people, has it changed how you talk about bags?
I still love bags! At the end of the day, I am also a consumer and one of the members of my community. The contents of Mr. Bags are created from the perception of real consumers. Therefore, I don’t include a lot of celebrity gossip in my content. Almost all of my content is my honest bag and shoe reviews.

In March 2019, Mr. Bags partnered with dunhill to create a White Valentine’s Day Special Chiltern backpack. This is the first collaboration to focus on a single man’s bag.

What is your morning ritual?
I drink a glass of lemon water every morning; it is part of my weight-loss routine.

How do you unwind after a long day?
Watching movies or playing escape room with friends.

If your house were on fire, what would you take with you?
Absolutely nothing. I wouldn’t hesitate for a second and would run out for help.

You have recently had an event with Michael Kors in London. What do you like about MMK bags?
I went with Michael Kors to London to celebrate the opening of his fabulous new store on Old Bond Street! I was so glad to host a fan meet-and-greet at the brand’s London Regent Street store while I was there as well. MICHAEL Michael Kors bags offer a chic, fashionable solution to girls of any age. Like the new Cece bag in black with studs—the design is simple and low-key, but still feels luxe.
